The ICU of the future: Getting from here to there?
Neil A Halpern MD, FACP, FCCP, FCCM, Chief Critical Care Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY

Opening with a national overview of critical care, this session will explore innovative approaches to designing the SmartICU.  We will explore infrastructure connectivity and task based servers that lead to enhanced association, communication, tracking, data flow and electronic flow sheet development with ICU devices, medical applications, providers and the ICU patient. We will look at both a stepwise approach to the SmartICU as well as the finished product and the challenges inherent in building the ICU of the future.

Building a Roadmap for a Smart Hospital Using RFID and RTLS Technologies
Mohammed Maghazil, D.Sc., King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center

In this session, the concept, vision, and intelligence infrastructure of a smart hospital will be explored.  In addition, the presentation will cover major issues such as patient safety, process workflow and cost, and what the benefit realization can be for using RFID and RTLS in hospitals.

Beyond ROI:  Realizing Your Return on Identification, Locating and Sensing Technology Investments
Raj Veeramani, PhD, Professor and Executive Director, UW E-Business Institute
Alfonso Gutierrez, University of Wisconsin RFID Lab

This session will present a holistic approach to evaluate the cost (initial and recurrent) and potential benefits of implementing these technologies in specific healthcare application scenarios.

RFID and RTLS Enhancing the Patient Experience, A Clinical Perspective
Debra Braun

This session will provide an overview of  the Department of Veterans Affairs Real Time Location System (RTLS) Project. Lessons learned and benefits that were realized from current installations and procurements will be highlighted along with future procurement plans for a Enterprise-Wide RTLS System.

Moving Towards an Enterprise Wide RTLS System in the Department of Veterans Affairs
Kimberley Braley

This session will provide an overview of  the Department of Veterans Affairs Real Time Location System (RTLS) Project. Lessons learned and benefits that were realized from current installations and procurements will be highlighted along with future procurement plans for a Enterprise-Wide RTLS System.

Lunch - Keynote Session
Smart Health: How the "Internet of Things" is Improving our Lives
Dr. Daniel Engels, PhD, Chief Technology Officer, Revere Security

This session will explore the "Internet of Things" as it exists today with a particular emphasis on those devices currently providing health benefits.
Passive RFID Case Studies

Improving Care and Reducing Costs with RFID and RTLS & RFID in Pharmacy Inventory Management Case Studies
Clint Abernathy, Director of Operations, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas
S. John Johnson, Director of Pharmacy, Sharp Memorial Hospital

This session will provide an overview of two case studies.   First, attendees will hear from Texas Health Dallas (THD) on how implementing an enterprise-wide real-time information platform with RFID and RTLS technologies  has improved identified Primary Points of Service, achieved hard-dollar cost savings, and improved patient satisfaction and patient safety.  Then learn how the RFID system is enabling the staff at Sharp Memorial Hospital to know where the drugs are located, as well as the amount of each product available in stock at all times, so that it can reduce the quantity of items that are never administered due to exceeding their expiration date.

Implementation of an Optimized Real Time Location System at Mount Sinai Hospital & Healthcare RTLS Best Practices
Donna Baer, Director, Strategic Projects, I.T., Mount Sinai Medical Center
Dennis Minsent, Director, Clinical Technology Services, Oregon Health and Science University

This session will provide an overview of two case studies.  Join us to hear from Mount Sinai Hospital on how their implementation of a real time location tracking system has enabled them to increase efficiency, advance patient safety, enhance healthcare workflow and improve patient and staff satisfaction. Then, attendees will hear from Oregon Health & Science University about current and proposed integrations and how they are leveraging existing vendor relationships to increase operational efficiencies and patient care.

Symposium Wrap-Up and Q & A

Description

This symposium will focus on the many applications of RFID and RTLS technologies currently deployed within different sectors of the healthcare industry, and will present the technical and business essentials needed for successful implementation. The experienced faculty will walk through deployments which have helped improve patient safety; provided real time visibility of high-value mobile assets; and have improved processes that lead to operating efficiencies and a higher quality of services delivered to the patient.

Learning Objectives

  1. Compare and contrast the various RFID and RLTS technologies
  2. Discuss best practices for implementing RFID and RTLS technologies including knowledge of successful case studies
  3. Describe a framework for the adoption and integration of these technologies into a healthcare organization's strategic plan

Target Audience

Those new to RFID and RTLS technology, senior and executive level IT, medical, and operations staff
